If I could use only one sentence to point you toward lasting happiness it would be this: True happiness can only be found in God, for only He can meet the deepest yearnings of our hearts. Let me explain.

You see, we aren't on this earth by accident. God created us, and He put us here for a reason: to know Him and to enjoy His presence in our lives, both now and throughout eternity. God even created us with an empty place in our hearts—an empty place that He alone can fill. The Bible says, "He has also set eternity in the hearts of men" (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Whenever we try to fill that empty place with anything or anyone other than God, we are bound to fail. No matter how many things we have or how successful we are, that empty place is still there. But when we come to Christ, we discover that God loves us, and He makes us part of His family. More than that, He comes to live within us by His Holy Spirit. Think of it: God wants you to be part of His family forever—beginning now.

By faith turn to God and tell Him that you know you need Him. Then open your heart and life to Christ and ask Him to fill the empty places in your life. Jesus promised, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives" (John 14:27). Turn to Christ today and discover the joy and peace He alone can give.

It's normal to experience low mood after negative life events its part of our normal psychological processing, so in the early stages rather than seeing sad feelings as a threat you just need to recognise emotions need time to express them selves. Maybe even indulge them a bit by watching sad films or sad music to allow yourself to grieve and to experience the full spectrum of your emotions. If you can't experience true sadness it is also difficult to experience true joy.

If low feelings are persistent say going on for a few months and there is no obvious bereavement issue then its simply your brains way of telling you theres a problem here! I'm going on strike till you offer me better pay and conditions. so it might simply be that you have become low due to putting off dealing with a major problem in your life e.g. a job you hate or a relationship thats not working.

if low moods turned into biological depression there will be certain physical symptom including

lack of interest or pleasure in every day activities
    poor sleep
    low motivation
poor memory and negative slant on past history
    negative or pessimistic thought processes
    feelings of guilt
    irritability
feeling slowed down in speech or body movements

if things have got to this stage then behavioural activation is the first step in getting better because its no good analysing things when you are depressed as your thought processes become unhelpful.

googling B A should lead you to some helpful pages

Behavioural activation is about recognising how your daily activities have changed since becoming depressed and gradually reintroducing activities that are likely to bring back feelings of purposefulness.

If the depression's is relatively mild and particularly if you have anxiety symptoms

st johns wort is not to be sniffed as there's no withdrawal effects from this either so a short trial wouldn't hurt.

There are some things that can be used to treat depression, but they can be extremely dangerous if your condition has not been properly diagnosed by a professional. Depression can convert to a much more complicated disorder called bipolar disorder - manic-depressive disorder - if the wrong treatment protocol is used. One of the "natural" treatments that has been used for years to treat primary depression (not severe or acute) - and has even been prescribed in Germany for years - is an herb called "Standardized Hypericum" - also known as "St. John's Wort". Taken as a supplement (pills) SJW can be as effective as some antidepressants (as effective as a placebo) - HOWEVER - it can also cause an individual to convert to hypo-mania or full blown mania if they have undiagnosed bipolar disorder, or Serotonin Syndrome - which can be fatal.

The short answer is that depression CAN be treated naturally - but - it should be treated under the supervision of a medical professional as the issues you might face could have severe consequences ... including death.
