Thread: Is OCD at the root of anyone who may be a sex addict?

I always read that people who are sexual compulsives really suffer from OCD because they have sex but its more to get rid of an urge. They often feel shame afterwards. But I also know sex addicts have impulse control problems where they cannot refrain from seeking out sexual gratification similar to alcoholics. It is a release for their stress and somewhat of a crutch that makes them feel stable again.

No, i don't think the two problems are linked psychologically. generally speaking people with OCD tend to be highly anxious regarding the idea harm towards other people where as people with sex addiction tend to have to temporarily disregard others needs in order to meet their own. Of course there may be a percentage of people who have both issues but I haven't so far met any.

www.slaauk.org is a self help organisation which has a similar programme to alcoholic's anonymous they have a self assessment tool which is helpful in recognising problems of sex or love addiction. This is uk based but I think there are similar organisations in the US.
