    painful ear popping remedy?

For the last week I've had this cough and a sore throat and my ears were popping. Now the cough is going away and my throat feels better, but my ears keep plugging and popping them is painful. My doctor has me on Mucinex (which I just started re-taking, since it didn't feel like it was working before) and I'm sucking on candy, but what do I do if my ears plug again? I don't want to cause any damage by unintentionally popping them when I yawn or swallow or blow my nose.
    I'm 24.

How old are you? I will respond after knowing because my solution is not suitable for minors.

Ok here is what I do. It has pretty much stopped my ear infections, fluid buildups etc. At the onset of a sore throat I stop drinking cold beverages. I drink room temp, warm or hot. If the throat gets worse I drink things like hot lemonade or broth. I start on the max allowed dosage of my antihistamine(s). I take a generic of Zertec and Benadryl when I have this I take both at night. I also use a nasal spray most often just plain saline spray but if it seem bad I take Afrin but us is sparingly as it is harsh. This and the antihistamines are what makes it for adults only. I do this until it gets better and a couple of extra days as a precaution. My Eustachian tubes must be really messed up because in the past I would get at least 2 ear problems a year before doing this. I have recently added another step to my plan. Due to various med issues my immune system so I keep some ampicillin around in case it starts to get out of had. I discovered this by accident because I always had some for when I went to the dentist they always want their patients to take some starting a day or so before a visit. Mostly for people like me and the elderly.
Since doing these I have had no ear problems. I do however still have bad allergy attacks and a couple of times it turned into viral bronchitis.
But that is still a whole lot better than before especially since my immune system is now worse.
