My 99 year old Grandma has just been given a heavy dose of it through a drip, and I was just wondering what it actually did, I apologise if I spelt it wrong.
My parents say it helps to rest her?
It's an opioid analgesic used to treat severe pain.
Diamorphine or street named "heroin" is a powerful narcotic pain killer derived from the opiate Morphine. It is an agonist an agonist of the mu-opiod receptors; a common action of other pain killers such as oxycodone morphine and hydrocodone. It is a CNS depressant(decreases brain activity) which can cause sedation.
It is very rarely used medically nowadays because of it's high potential for abuse.
